Using music to make a positive difference in pre-school child development

Monkey Music is built on the premise that music is fundamental to a pre-school age child's development. Their progressive and educational four stage curricula for babies and pre-school children, written by teachers and musical experts, are designed to nurture a lifetime of music.

Franchises offer:
  • Regular Classes around an area
  • Parties and events
  • Holiday workshops
  • Nurseries - the curiculum links closely with the Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Merchandise

Monkey Music was founded in South East London in 1993 by Angie Coates, who trained as a musician at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Since those early days, a huge amount of research into early music education has now proved what Angie, as a mother of five, had always believed was true - that early exposure to music can offer enormous benefits to babies and young children. Demand for classes grew at a dramatic rate and in 1998 the company was franchised.

Today, more than 45 successful franchises operate at over 300 locations across the UK and every week more than 10,000 families visit the classes. It was a finalist in the British Franchisor of the Year Awards 2013 and 2010 in the 'Best Franchisee Support' category

Basic Information:

Skills and knowledge required

Franchisees come from a variety of backgrounds. There are former teachers, TV producers, child minders, West End stars, chartered accountants, marketing managers,  events managers, opera singers, actors, retailers, fashion buyers … Franchisees fall into two categories:
  • Those who both manage the business and teach some classes along with their teaching team who they recruit to support them as their business grows
  • Those who opt to focus solely on the business development and management and who engage teachers from day one

Requirements:
  • You need to be confident, articulate and a good communicator
  • You need to be passionate about customer service and working with young families
  • If you wish to teach (which isn’t vital) you need to have a tuneful singing voice
  • You must believe in the fundamental role that music plays in early development
  • You will also be decisive and self-motivated and able to lead others
  • You need to be organised, be able to drive and be computer literate
It is NOT a requirement that you can play the piano or the guitar.

Franchisees receive initial intensive training and support programme on all aspects of running a Monkey Music franchise, Day to day support from the Franchise Manager who is available to advise on plans and growing the business, subsequent ongoing training in the form of regular group invitations along with specialist support by Monkey Music Head Office team.

Franchise fee

The Monkey Music franchise fee is £12,975 + VAT.

Working Capital required is not given.

The primary source of income is from weekly class fees. Additional sources of income are achieved from offering children’s parties, event entertainment, holiday workshops, nursery class teaching and the sale of Monkey Music Merchandise.

BRITISH FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION

In 1977, the major franchise companies in the UK decided to set up their own association. The British Franchise Association (bfa), was formed to act in the interests of the industry as a whole in assessing and accrediting franchising companies as those which meet its criteria for the structure of the franchise business, the terms of the contract between franchisor and franchisee, the testing of the system and its success as a franchise.

On this site, we only feature franchisors who are either:

Full Members of the bfa
Full Members are established franchised businesses with a proven trading and franchising record. They are prepared to have their reputation examined by the bfa, and have an established network of franchisees.

or

Associate Members of the bfa
Associate Members have proven their ability to launch and support at least one franchised outlet for 12 months and are now in the business of building their network. There will be few franchisees whose experience you can research and a short period of time over which the business has been tested.
